Is the dominate culture in America today destined to destroy itself?

Isn't consumerism (or corporatism) exactly the same as fascism? Do the results of the last 8 years (or even more fairly the last 40) indicate we are toast if we continue on this path? Would you give up your lifestyle to embrace a new culture of sustainable ecologically aware living?
