Help with internet and virus?

I received a pop-up msg as i logged into a website...the msg was weird, along with an eerie devil laughing. It stated that the website was banned...(but of course it was not.)... Then, my window internet explorer programme automatically closed. Is this some kind of virus? Is this serious? How can I get rid of it?
