Painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC?

I don't remember the name of it or the section it was in, but i went to the Met. several months ago to see the women in fashion exhibit and while there, looked around at some of the beautiful paintings that are there. I came upon a hauntingly beautiful painting of a man with the most shocking, dark, tortured eyes. I know it was not modern art and I know that it was a painting of a man who had some sort of terrible past and wound up killing himself, and possibly other people, i don't remember. I know this is very vague but maybe someone will know what I'm talking about. Thank you!
